Comparing Homeschooling and Standard Schooling

This turned up in my Facebook newsfeed today. I really like it and so I’m sharing it. It’s pretty excellent.

Yes, I Did, Indeed, Make Leg Warmers

So I discovered a crafting blog called Design Adventures and there I found a cute pattern for leg warmers which I crocheted for my lady.

I never ever wear heels, by the way, but if my calves are going to be on the internet, they dang better look hella sexy.

So check out the pattern because it’s really easy and kinda awesome. And the leg warmers are very warm. I can’t wait to give them to my lady so I can publish this post.

Flipping the Bird Part Deux…

So, 7 months later and I’m still using Ubuntu and I have upgraded to 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. Back in April, I wrote Flipping the Birdabout my adventures in getting my webcam working properly with Skype. I wasn’t wild about the Unity interface, and I’m still really not, but I have kept using it and it has grown on me to a certain extent. I am thinking about switching to Linux Mint, but even in that event, I’m sure I will still have to mess with this crap yet again, futzing with the webcam settings. But that isn’t what this post is about; it is about the fact that I have upgraded (I actually installed Oneiric from scratch) and I ran into the same issue I had before with Skype talking to my webcam driver properly. As before, everything else having anything to do with my webcam talks to Video4Linux just fine. *sigh*

Oneiric has removed all support for any of the gnome options available before, so I couldn’t change the command easily anymore. I actually had to go into the .desktop file and change that. I found though, that it really wasn’t as painful as I thought it would be. So, per the instructions again on this post I entered this command to launch the .desktop editor:

sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop

and adjusted the Exec line to read like this:

Exec=bash -c ‘LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype’

I used this version of the command because I have a 64-bit system. Save file, close it and launch Skype.

To be fair, when I opened the terminal, I ran the exec command line straight in the terminal and when Skype opened I tested the video settings to make sure Skype was talking to Video4Linux. It was. 😀 After I saved the .desktop file, I tested Skype again from the launcher in my dock. It worked there too.

Unkneaded Bread

Unkneaded bread rules. It is awesome if you can have something fresh and homemade that requires little work. This is the recipe I’ve taken to.

3 Tablespoons dry active yeast (1 package is 2 1/2 tablespoons, and that works just about as well.)
1 Teaspoon salt
2 Cups warm water
4 Cups flour
Mix it all together and let it sit away from drafts for 2 or so hours. Grease a cookie sheet and dump the dough from the bowl onto the sheet. Let it sit for 20 minutes while the oven pre-heats to 480 degrees. Bake for 15 minutes. Lower the temperature to 260 degrees and let it bake for another 40 or so minutes. Keep an eye on it because every bread is going to turn out slightly different and that may be long enough to burn it.

Part Twelve of Many: The Montessori Life: Teaching Addition

Once the children start to get the hang of one’s, tens, hundreds and thousands, you can start introducing addition. It’s pretty simple: you come up with two four digit numbers that do not require you to carry. When you’re demonstrating have one child get the beads for one of the numbers from the bank and have another child get the beads for the other number. Then on the mat, lay out one number with the Thousand cubes to the farthest left, then the hundred squares, then the tens strings, the units and finally the cards with the zeros overlapped on the right side. Follow the same process with the other four digit number. Now group together all of the thousands and have one child pull out the card that shows how many thousands there are. Follow the same process with the hundreds, the tens and the units. Overlap the zeros on the cards and read the number to the children. At that point simply say, “________ (the first four digit number) plus _________(the second four digit number) equals _________ (the four digit number that the groups combined to make). Would you like to record that?” and present the children with a paper that has spaces to write down the addition problem they just solved.

I’m a dwarf with multiple personality disorder

I’ve been sick since I got back from New England. I denied it at first, but for sure, I have a cold (or something). So, I’m sleepy and sneezy and dopey. I’m also grumpy. No one appreciates this personality.
