Survival in the world today is predicated on avoiding the things that make us wish we were “other.” News flash to all those out there: you are not “other!” You are you and you are loved and appreciated for being you! Don’t try to change yourself to suit other people’s desires. You are just fine the way you are naturally.
That isn’t to say that there aren’t things we can do to enrich our lives. Following the paths to make ourselves healthier is something everyone should do. Being good to the people around us makes us better friends and draws better friends back to us. We should all take care of ourselves and each other, but that doesn’t mean going for some ridiculously unrealistic goal that is forever unreachable because you simply aren’t who the person you think you should be.
Some things to keep in mind:
-Do the things you like doing, and stay away from the things you don’t.
-Avoid the things you like doing that are bad for you and the people who are bad for you that go along with them.
-Think about the feelings you really want most, set goals for making your situation such that you feel those things and focus on attaining those goals.
-Stay away from people who make you feel bad: ALL people who make you feel bad.
-Stay close to people who make you feel good.
-It’s ok to cut yourself off from the things that aren’t good for you.
-You don’t need to be a martyr. Don’t expose yourself to situations where you know you’ll feel bad just because you think you should no matter who the people in those situations are.
